Each term (Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer) Deutsches Haus offers a Book Club for intermediate to advanced students interested in reading and discussing contemporary German literature. It is open to people who can speak and read German with some proficiency, but is not restricted to fluent speakers. Originally designed to give students the opportunity to practice German in a relaxed environment outside of the classroom. Newcomers are welcome. The Book Club is open to non-students as well.

Der Kathrin Jonas Buchclub des Deutschen Hauses meets on selected Fridays between 6:00 and 7:30 PM. If you'd like more information, or would like to join the Book Club, please contact Bernd at dhbuchclub@mac.com. Please confirm about space availability with Bernd before  registering ONLINE (enter details in "Specific Event" section of the form). No refunds are available once you register for the book club. Thank you!

Book Club Winter 2013

“Aller Tage Abend” von Jenny Erpenbeck

Aller Tage Abend opens in Galicia in 1901 with the funeral of a baby girl who has died of cot death.

In the first part of the book we witness the mother’s overwhelming grief for her child, her husband’s emigration to America and the woman’s struggle to maintain her family’s grocery business.

However, each of the book’s subsequent sections proceeds as though the girl did not die in infancy and envisions an alternative life story for her, each with its own fatal conclusion.
