Festival Neue Literatur 2017: "Born This Way: Writing the Personal"

Saturday, March 4, 6:00 p.m.

powerHouse Books, 28 Adams Street, Brooklyn

About "Born This Way: Writing the Personal": As Virginia Woolf put it in A Room of One's Own: “Sometimes women do like women.” Bringing queer stories to a straight world is a task that often falls to LGBTQ writers. But should LGBTQ writers feel an obligation to write fiction inspired by their own experiences? This panel explores the burdens of representation and the role of personal and literary influences, showing how LGBTQ lives come into literature. Featuring Zora del Buono, Antje Rávic Strubel, and Jürgen Bauer, Darryl Pinckney, and moderated by Geoff Mak of The Offing Magazine.

RSVPs are required due to limited seating. You can register for the event here.

About Festival Neue Literatur (March 2 – 5):
Festival Neue Literatur brings New York audiences new writing from Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and the United States, as the first and only festival to spotlight German-language and American fiction. The 2017 festival marks the first ever convening of queer-centric, German-language texts in the United States, as festival authors take on this year’s theme Queer as Volk. Join us!

The 2017 festival, which is curated by acclaimed editor Peter Blackstock, features the following authors: Jürgen Bauer and Marlen Schachinger (Austria); Antje Rávic Strubel and Fabian Hischmann (Germany); Zora Del Buono and Simon Froehling (Switzerland); and Eileen Myles, and Darryl Pinkney (United States).

Each year, the festival also produces a reader featuring book summaries and sample translations of the featured German-language works. The 2017 reader will be available for download in an electronic version on the festival website. You can download it here shortly.

All events are free of charge and held in English. | Facebook
